Chief Resident![]() Sophia Fu, M.D.,Chief Surgical Resident Department of Surgery at SUNY Downstate Medical Center
About: Dr. Sophia L. Fu is a native New Yorker who grew up on Long Island. She is an avid swimmer and artist who has a love of languages. She graduated cum laude from Barnard College of Columbia University with a Bachelors degree in Biochemistry with distinction after completing her Senior Honors Thesis on the antimicrobial properties of Bromotryptophan. She then pursued her medical education at New York Medical College, where she discovered her love of surgery and continued interest in research. During her residency in general surgery at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, she became an integral part of Dr. Michael Zenilman's lab, studying pancreatic cancer and pancreatitis, culminating in many national presentations and publications. While in the lab, she also taught the Biomedical Engineering students at NYU-Polytechnic University while obtaining a Masters of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering herself. Upon completion of her residency in 2012, she plans on practicing in general surgery.
