About:

Michael E. Zenilman graduated college Phi Beta Kappa from State University of New York at Stony Brook, with Highest Honors in Biology. He received his medical degree from SUNY Downstate, graduating Summa Cum Laude and member of Alpha Omega Alpha in 1984.

He completed his residency training in general surgery at Washington University School of Medicine, Barnes Hospital, in 1991. There he spent two years as a fellow in Gastrointestinal Surgery.

His first academic appointment was in the Department of Surgery at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, where he was exposed to a large Geriatric Surgery population of patients. He then served as Vice Chairman, Associate Professor of Surgery and Program Director of the General Surgery Residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center, and the Director of Surgical Services at the Jack D. Weiler Hospital at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Dr. Zenilman is an established clinician, teacher and researcher. In 1993, he was awarded an American College of Surgeons Faculty Fellowship and has been the principal investigator of a NIH funded project, entitled Physiology of Pancreatic Regeneration. An author or more than 80 peer reviewed articles, he has published papers on clinical pancreatic surgery as well as the molecular biology of pancreatic regeneration after injury.

An author of over 30 book chapters, Dr. Zenilman recently edited the second edition of the textbook entitled Principles and Practices of Geriatric Surgery. He serves on the editorial board of two major journals, and is a member of the Geriatric Surgery Task Force of the American College of Surgeons and the Jahnigan Scholarship Leadership Committee of the American Geriatrics Society.

His clinical interests are in gastrointestinal, pancreatic and geriatric surgery, and he has led panels at national meetings on each topic.

As program director for the general surgery residencies at Montefiore and SUNY Downstate, Dr Zenilman has trained over 60 surgical residents and 20 research fellows.
