The Department of Surgery at the SUNY Downstate Medical Center has a long and distinguished history of cutting-edge surgical research ranging from basic science to clinical studies as well as research training.

Current research in the laboratory focuses on functional studies of secretory proteins that regulate inflammation, regeneration and cancer development in the pancreas and other gastrointestinal organs. We apply experimental disease models in genetically modified mice to analyze the pathogenesis of these disorders in order to develop innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

In collaboration with clinicians and other basic science investigators we provide our surgical residents and medical students with extensive opportunities for training in molecular studies of inflammation and carcinogenesis. Categorical general surgery residents have the option of spending up to two years to perform independent laboratory research with the support of the Department of Surgery.
