Richmond University Medical Center - Surgical Residency Program, Department of Surgery at SUNY Downstate Medical Center (RUMC) - Surgical Residency Program at SUNY Downstate Medical Center

Richmond University Medical Center

RUMC is a full-service 510 bed Healthcare Facility serving as one of two hospitals in the NYC Borough of Staten Island, populated by over 500,000 people. It has a long history of resident education, hosting independent teaching programs in Medicine, Pediatrics, Ob/Gyn and Radiology.

There has been a long connection with SUNY-Downstate Medical Center's Department of Surgery as an affiliate and recently integrated institution for the training of surgical residents. Three full-time surgeons lead the Divisions of General, Trauma and Vascular Surgery, while four part-time surgeons lead the Divisions of Pediatric, Plastic, Thoracic and Minimally Invasive Surgery. Over 20 voluntary surgeons use RUMC to provide the surgical services for their patients and actively participate in the surgical residency training.

RUMC is a NYS Level 1 Trauma Center, admitting over 100 cases per month to our busy trauma service. The Operating Room performs an average of 50 cases per week in the disciplines described above and residents are given an opportunity to participate in Urologic, ENT, Orthopedic and Hand surgery services.

There is a 10-bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit staffed by a Board Certified Surgical Intensivist and experience is offered in surgical endoscopy by a Colorectal Specialist. Outpatient clinics for General, Vascular, Breast, Trauma and Pediatric Surgery are provided with resident participation.
