The Operating Room (OR) Cardiothoracic (CT) Surgical Nursing Team is composed of experienced Registered Nurses, Surgical Technicians, and Nursing Assistants, that are substantially trained in handling and assisting with the CT surgical equipment. The CT surgical nursing team has decades of cardiothoracic surgery experiences. This dedicated team is led by a highly skilled OR CT Clinical Coordinator, who is devoted to optimal patient safety outcomes, and is under the management of the OR Nursing Director, who is committed to Process Improvement and Educational Program. Each individual staff works collaboratively among the OR nursing team members, the CT surgeons, anesthesiologists, and perfusionists to achieve optimal surgical outcomes.

Within the OR Suite, there are two OR rooms fully equipped to support Cardiac Surgery. The CT OR is the center piece of the OR with observation atrium for teaching purpose. The OR has a full range of State-of-the-Art equipment available to support a comprehensive Cardiac Surgery Program. The following are a few of the newly acquired CT equipment being used at Downstate:

» Terumo Advanced Perfusion System 1 (Heart-Lung Machines)
» CentriMag Ventricular Assist System, the first temporary disposable Ventricular Assist Device
» Epicor Cardiac Ablation System for Surgical Ablation of Atrial Fibrillation
» Solargen 2100s Cardiovascular Delivery System with Holmium Laser for use in Transmyocardial Revascularization
» Vasoview Endoscopic Vessel Harvesting System for use in endoscopic harvesting of saphenous vein and radial artery
» Harmonic Scalpel - An ultrasound cutting and coagulating surgical device

The OR has also initiated the procurement process to acquire the HeartMate™ II LVAD to support the launching of the Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) Program, a very much needed treatment modality for Heart Failure patients in this day and age, and for Brooklyn at large.
